The Ruins of Gorlan
by John Flanagan
good series start. (natalya read to me, so it was extra enjoyable.) flanagan puts a lot of detail into this fantasy/medieval time-frame; and still provides plenty of action... explores bullying a bit (which i found really interesting that it seemed so conscious)..
is a bit violent, i suppose. fun though.. has humor, suspense, intrigue and a fairly terrifying beast near the end.
pretty sure boys would dig this one, but i wouldn't discount a girl's interest; natalya (and i) are ready for the next several books.
