The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro

emotional mysterious reflective relaxing sad slow-paced

I'd held off reading this for a long time, just because it had been so unbelievably hyped. About 10 years after buying a copy I've finally gotten round to reading it. I'm very glad I did!

Reminiscent of An Artist Of The Floating World, the story revolves around an aging butler setting out on a cross country journey. Along the way he reflects about his life, coming to some shattering conclusions along the way.

This is a slow, meandering novel about regrets and the choices which make up our lives. It takes a while to come to its conclusions, but that's OK. The journey is profound and beautiful and one I will gladly take again.
