Applegarth does it again! I loved this book. I love Violet and Roman’s dynamic. I appreciate how they complement each other, and how Violet helps Roman have a soft side. I also love how he is obsessed with puzzles! AND, I appreciate that we have a FMC who isn’t a warrior, and who does like things besides fighting, combat, strategy, and other qualities that many FMCs have in fantasy realms. I love how obsessed Roman is with Violet, and how thoughtful and purposeful he is towards her. I also really liked how welcoming Roman’s parents, especially his mom Sarah, are towards Violet. She’s a hoot!
Like the first book, I didn’t enjoy the smut. It’s not my favorite to have it written in such an open way, and at some points I just wanted Roman and Violet to do something cute together like when they stole chickens.
I think the last 20% of the book needed more. I hate that the rebel attack occurred so close to the end, it didn’t leave much time for resolution. Plus, the rebel attack just seemed too easy. I know Applegarth has caveats that this isn’t about world building or fantasy, so I get why she didn’t build it up more or make it more dramatic. However, it would have been good character development if Violet had to have protected Roman in some way. He always did so much for her, and I wanted to see Violet put in a similar amount of effort. I also think Vivian could’ve had a better redemption arc.
Regardless, I read this book so fast, and I never wanted to put it down. It was so cute, so special, so fun. I love seeing men fall head over heels for their partners. Everyone needs the men that Applegarth writes about. I’m counting down the days until her next book in this series. I usually don’t like dark romance or feral MMCs, but I do in Applegarth’s books.
