African Town by Charles Waters, Irene Latham

5.0

A powerfully written and incredibly moving novel in verse about the last Africans who were brought illegally to the United States as part of the transatlantic slave trade. I had no prior knowledge about the Clotilda, the African Town settlement, or the fact that slave ships continued running after Congress officially outlawed the importation of enslaved people into the United States. I thought this story was beautifully and powerfully told and I think this will be an important and popular addition to any middle grades collection.
