I didn't entirely know what I was getting into other than the obvious famous "Big Brother is watching you." So I was quite surprised when there was the introduction of Winston and Julia's romance (if you can call it that). Winston's status as a bland, mid-level everyman was a great vessel to discuss the dystopian society and its inner workings, but at times, especially in the middle chapters where he is studying the history of Big Brother where the book gets very dry. Still, it is painfully relevant to our political climate and an important literaty touchstone and it's abundantly clear why this has such staying power.
