The Song of the Marked
by S.M. Gaither
The first 3 audiobooks in this series were free on Audible this weekend, so I jumped right into this book. I've been in a reading slump for a bit and was so pleasantly surprised how much I loved this book.
I'm so tired of whiney, damsel in distress FMCs, and Casia was exactly what I needed to break this streak that has been so common in the books I've been reading. She is strong and can fight her own battles despite battling anxiety. She's constantly in action to keep the anxiety from overwhelming her, which means she can act pretty recklessly at times, but it is so much better than listening to 10 minutes of an FMC's inner dialogue where she considers how her actions will affect everyone but herself, and then still makes the wrong decision.
So far, no annoying miscommunication trope, either. She actually communicates and confides in her friends! Shocker! And speaking of her friends, she's got a good mix of male and female friends, who are just that, friends. They support her, and she supports them. No pick-me girl attitude here, and it's just refreshing.
Elander is a solid MMC. I won't say much about him to avoid spoilers, but he's book boyfriend worthy, for sure.
The audiobook narration by Jesse Vilinsky was top notch. I wasn't familiar with her work before, but I'd definitely listen to her other works.
