This is a really nice addition to the Anne of Green Gables stories. Readers get to see how Anne came to be and all the hardships she went through. Seeing Anne be mistreated by the Thomas is heartbreaking, but seeing her still strive to learn and have her imagination with Katie Maurie really shows Anne's character. After she goes with the Hammond families, she does her best with doing chores and babysitting, while still going to school. She meets her friend Violetta through echos. Anne is still able to keep up her imagination, even with all her stress. However, when Mr. Hammond dies and all the relatives come take each of the kids, Anne is sent to an orphanage. Anne works hard still in the orphanage, even though it was the one place she never wanted to be. This prequel really shows how resilient Anne is and how she never gave up on life.
