I remember hearing others in my high school being assigned this book and saying it was confusing. Well, I am very glad I waited a few years before taking on this book myself. This is the first book by Toni Morrison I have read and I was blown away.
I will admit that you have to put care into reading this, but not because it is confusing, it’s because Morrison’s prose is so elegant and deep. Each time I reread a passage more elements jumped out at me and I was sucked even further in. Her prose also has a way of conveying feeling. A sense of dread, melancholy, and sadness that adds such emotional impact to an already deep book.
This is one of those books I will be rethinking about for some time trying to take it apart and understand it all.
