The Only Plane in the Sky: An Oral History of 9/11 by Garrett M. Graff

5.0

I've been gradually listening to this amazing audiobook for months. Having lived through the events of 9/11, I was intrigued by the own voices accounts within the story, but also terrified to relive it so deeply. This book is not riddled by gratuitous descriptions of the events, but those that were included were absolutely relevant to the day's events. Some of the descriptions were accurate in a way that was difficult to hear.
I was fortunate that day. I no longer live near the areas that were attacked but I do have family and friends who are there. Many of the family or friends lost people that day, either through the NYFD or the complex of buildings that employed so many at the time. As in the recounting, I recall my husband calling from work and telling me to turn the TV on now. I asked what channel and he said, it doesn't matter. That is never a good thing. It was a horrific day for all Americans, whether in the area or empathizing with those that were.
The story really draws the picture of what the day was like for the country and for all those directly involved. It is beautifully done and worth the read. The audiobook is especially well done because there is an entire cast of voices telling the story. It scales time from prior to the actual attacks and then to current day, where the children who were not born yet when 9/11 happened are heading to college.
Not an easy listen but completely worthwhile. It is an emotional read so I decided to space it out longer. This did not effect by following the people or events.
