fern_mollett 's review for:
Fauna
by Christiane Vadnais
CW/TW: rape, child abuse, animal butchering, body horror, suicide, murder
2.5 stars really. It was alright. I've read so many like it that have done it better.
Collection of vingettes rather than a novella that flows. Parts are separated by paragraphs describing how different branches of animals dream (for whatever reason)?
The story doesn't really have a clear plot, only telling the stories of a handful of characters dealing with changes. If it was any longer I would have DNF'd it.
Laura, a biologist trying to understand the parasite in the water that's changing everything, animals, humans, and herself.
Oppostie her, Heather, a strange woman with an animalistic hunger shows up throughout the book, a sort of antagonist. And in between, stories of various characters all dealing with their own mutations.
A combination of climate and body horror that isn't totally unique, but still a fine addition to the genre.
