My Thoughts On (And Slight Complaints About) The Avant-Guards #5
1. Okay, I really enjoy The Avant-Guards. It has all the things I love: feminist references, diversity, and girls playing basketball. I am into all of this. But, one complaint. There's way less basketball in this series than I would like.
2. On the lack of basketball note... This cover is deceptive. There is no basketball in this issue (unless you count them standing around at practice, where they stand around and never take a single shot.)
3. I am convinced that Jay and Ashley were meant to be roommates and best friends. They're the perfect pair. Jay is quiet but thoughtful, and Ashley can do all the talking for the both of them. Also, they have a great dynamic. I ship this brotp.
4. Is Jay non-binary? I think they're non-binary, and I love it! The Avant-Guards is here doing representation right.
5. Jay and Tyler's quiet but emotional hug at the airport is couple goals. I can't believe I thought Jay was single and going to end up with Charlie in the first issue. Shame on me! I like this better.
6. Jay's aversion to being the center of attention is highly relatable content, and it also makes me like them more. "I want my art to be my voice. I don't like the spotlight. I like to work hard in the background. I like being part of a team. My team."
7. The team all came out to support Jay and their art, and my soul is singing! Predictably but wonderfully, Charlie is wearing a black blazer with a white shirt and red pants instead of a dress, and Olivia is wearing a pink blouse and purple pencil skirt. This is only important information because I love how they look together.
8. I'm really not sure what's going on with Charlie and Olivia. Why is Olivia so hot and cold? Charlie may think she's bad at feelings, but at least she's straightforward about it.
9. Oh god, please don't have a secret relationship plotline. Those never end well, and I hate them.
