I love a story that feels like a moment in a larger world with a thousand untold stories. Yes, this is a world with magicked hands, but it's mostly a story about Phyllis and Dev and race and identity. The magicked hands of course are parts of characters' personalities, but it slides in so neatly with these other facets of them that it makes the world feel nigh imperceptible to our own. Johnson's prose is delicious, and the dialogue goes above and beyond; can't wait to see what comes next.
