Metal Slinger

This book was really good until about 400 pages in where I just felt utter dread waiting for the other shoe to drop. Which is a sign of good pacing and planning of a story - I’m definitely not saying it’s a bad thing to have a book that gives you feelings of dread. It’s a sign of an author that knows what they’re doing.
My rating is lower for this book simply because the ending left me feeling yucky (I really don’t know what other word to use) and frustrated. I went in knowing that betrayal was a huge theme, but I didn’t expect the betrayal to come from where it did. Again, a sign of very good writing and pacing.
My low star rating is also because Acker really got on my nerves a lot. I kept finding myself thinking “This dude kind of sucks. If he ends up being a crazy manipulating liar, I won’t be super shocked.” Every situation that was slightly uncomfortable, his first reaction was unadulterated rage which was like woah where did that come from? He gave me whiplash. His emotions would be fine and then a split second later he would be manic and it was hard to keep up with him.
I felt really bad for Jovie the whole time because Acker and Hallis were “soft” gaslighting her and acting like she should know what’s going on even though she had no way of knowing anything and then people would get upset with her for it? After a while I just was frustrated by the lack of knowledge of the FMC and the looks and whispers she was picking up on from other people and no explanation to what any of those interactions were about. You get some closure on this at the end though which made it a little better.
So in a nutshell, the book was really good, I just didn’t like the feelings it gave me when I finished it, which is why it wasn’t rated higher. Just wasn’t my particular cup of tea but was still really good and I would recommend it.
