“‘I want to choose my own fate. I want freedom.’
She kicked the dirt, scattering dust. ‘I deserve to choose.’”

Whew! This book was a fast-paced, thrilling fantasy narrative with no spice, limited descriptions of violence and clean language. However, this story covers dark, adult themes and the quality of the story is not compromised in any way. Right from the start, you’re pulled into Ravenna’s world and it’s not until a third of the way through the story you get a moment to breathe before the action picks up again. No matter how good her intentions trouble and heartbreak seem to follow Ravenna, but she never fails to rise to the challenge. Even as she doubts herself or the obstacle in front of her, Ravenna grows into one of the strongest female characters I’ve read about and it’s inspiring. There are so many nuggets in this book that pay off throughout the story, and many more I suspect will pay off in future installments. The twists and turns will keep you entertained from start to finish!

"She was divine. He had fallen in love with the fierceness that radiated from her, but as the ferocity grew over the years, she was becoming harder and harder to tame."

I don't want to give any of the book away (it was unbelievably challenging to pick good quotes that didn't spoil the plots twists) because I truly think going in somewhat blind is best. This is a unique fantasy which beautifully covers darker themes of loss, violence, darkness/evil, self-worth and more. There is some biblical theming to the narrative (Father of the Light, creation stories, light vs. dark, etc.), but as someone who is absolutely not religious, please don't let that put you off because this truly is a story about resilience. I genuinely enjoyed this beautifully written story and look forward to seeing more of the world Abby has created for us.

"He would do anything for the broken, precious soul before him to have a second chance at a family. She deserved to know happiness once more and to find her own purpose. She had given him one, and he would forever be indebted to her. So, he rose to his feet and drew his sword."
