My Favorite Thing Is Monsters, Vol. 1 by Emil Ferris

5.0

My Favorite Thing is Monsters is a graphic novel made from beautiful full-color illustrations drawn with ballpoint pen. The story is the diary of Karen, 10 years old and obsessed with pulp fiction. Karen always pictures herself as a wolfman detective.

Much like Harriet the Spy and other kid detective novels, Karen quickly finds herself in over her head. Between the death of her upstairs neighbor, unravelling a personal story of a survivor of Nazi Germany, and coming into close contact with the racial tension of 60's Chicago, Karen becomes aware of the political world she is in. Likewise, the story includes Karen coming to understand her own sexual orientation.

This is my favorite graphic novel; I strongly recommend you check it out if you like monsters, queer coming-of-age stories, or child detective stories. Volume 2 comes out in Fall 2020 and I cannot wait for it!
