It could be tempting to wish each character’s story went into more detail but I really grew to love the format this book takes. While getting only snapshots of each individual’s life, building on the history I knew came before allowed me to learn about the family as a whole in depth instead. The story is heartbreaking and uplifting and gives a really nuanced portrait of the lives of generations shifting and changing and growing with the world. Really beautiful.
