Burnt Offerings by Laurell K. Hamilton

3.0

I only give this one three stars because I ended up sitting it down for a while before picking it back up and finishing. It's not that it is not as good as the others, I just wasn't as into it.
In this book, we see Anita's power continue to grow, including her power of being the lupa of the pack. It extends to the were-leopards who pack leader she had killed in previous books. There is an unexpected visit from the Vampire Council to either get Jean Claude to join their ranks or kill him.
The trifecta with Anita, Jean Claude, and Richard continues to grow, against Richard's desire. In fact he is mad when he discovers Anita tapping into his power to protect the wolves while he is gone. But at the end, he kind of realizes he needs her and needs Jean Claude.
In fact it is something Richard says to Anita when one of vampires brought by the council is given the chance to bite her. Richard realizes that she still has not let Jean Claude bite her and he sort of laughs because it means she can't completely give her self to him either.
She realizes this in the last pages of the book. She realizes that she can have sex with him and hold him while he is awake and 'alive' but once the sun comes up and he is practically a cold corpse in her bed, she always flees.
Another twist in this book is that Asher, Jean Claude's oldest friend comes with the vampire council, seeking revenge on Jean Claude for his torture and the death of their previous beloved. He ends up being enthralled with Anita and does not bite and he he sticks around after the council leaves.
