Alif the Unseen by G. Willow Wilson

I enjoyed the book. The ending was a bit of a mess (I'm not sure how else it could end). But it was hard to put down and I really was sucked into the story.

One interesting thing about the ending was how it portrayed the Arab Spring. The book was written when the Spring had not yet fully sprung, and things were still pretty optimistic that democratic reform would take hold in the region. And yet, the portrayal of the protesters in the book is not all songs and roses. They crowds that symbolize the movement are depicted as hopeful but also a bit scary.
