The Demon-Haunted World by Carl Sagan
5.0
dark hopeful informative inspiring reflective medium-paced

Carl Sagan was a huge icon for me growing up (despite him passing before I was even born) and I’ve wanted to read this for years. Absolutely did not disappoint. Reading this almost 30 years since it was first published and its kind of terrifying how accurately Sagan predicted the decline of American education and the rise of a conservative facist government in its wake. Despite all that doom and gloom, Sagan also gives us detailed instruction manual to combat the rampant misinformation and lack of education that permeates our culture, which he humorously calls The Baloney Detection Kit.
Overall this is an incredible book that takes a strong and decisive stance against the new age mysticism and the often ignorant and sometimes even racist and misogynistic culture it breeds. Anyone and everyone should read this book and take its message to heart.

Frederick Douglass taught us that literacy is the path from slavery to freedom. There are many kinds of slavery and many kinds of freedom. But reading is still the path.
