"Back then, when I was a young woman, there were still witches."
I’ve read several books by Silvia Moreno-Garcia and truly can’t get enough. The Bewitching was yet another hit from my speculative/historical fiction queen (maybe I’m a little biased). The story unfolds across multiple timelines, and even though slow burns aren’t usually my thing, I still appreciated the depth she gave each character over a hundred-year span.
The villains aren’t exactly hard to spot, but that actually adds to the tension rather than taking away from it. This isn’t a mystery, and it doesn’t try to be. The ending was hands-down my favorite part, weaving the timelines together in a way that caught me off guard but felt so satisfying. I also loved the Afterword, where she shared the real-life inspirations behind the names and settings — not surprised a few iconic horror authors and places made the cut!
All in all, a great read. Definitely recommend if you’re into a more non-traditional, layered take on a witchy tale.
TWs: Incest, Animal Death, mentions of blood
