Ari Wright does it again. I truly don't know how she continues to write such heartwarming, romantic, relatable, and spicy books!! The Most Valuable Player series is truly not one to be missed.
I really love the way Ari wrote Bridget as a plus-size character. Bridget's weight plays a factor into how she feels around her family and society, but she is still confident in herself and doesn't try to shrink. Instead, she's constantly wearing bright colors and bold patterns, and gives every part of herself to her students and community. I found it incredibly realistic that the way people treated Bridget because of her scent and her size would have such large unconscious impacts, even though she isn't thinking about her weight and her body 24/7. I need more authors to write characters like this!
As for the alphas, goodness! They are quite the cast of characters. At the beginning I wasn't sure what to make of Dante and Colt, or where their arcs would take them, but I grew to love them and the journey they were on. Seeing such distinct characters with different paths to growth made this an incredibly well-rounded and rewarding read.
This book was also really funny. Probably her sassiest character to date, Bridget was a bundle of light and snark. I loved the bickering between her and the alphas, and her relationship with her elderly neighbor. The characters were all so full of life, I didn't want to stop reading!
Tropes: Baseball romance, forced proximity, fake engagement, grumpy x sunshine, hurt/comfort, age gap, enemies to lovers, old friends to lovers
Spice: exhibitionism, group, heat, semi-public, DVP, free use, ruts
FMC: Bridget - omega, colorful, generous, plus-sized, intelligent, tough, generous, loves deeply, puts everyone else before herself
MMCs: Adrian - pack alpha, baseball team manager, older than the rest, calm, grounded, self-assured, takes care of his pack
Jesse - alpha, baseball player, awkward and shy around Bridget, known her since they were kids, sweet
Colt - alpha, injured baseball player, chip on his shoulder, brooding, befriends the cat first
Dante - alpha, baseball player, hyper, full of joy, doesn't think he's deserving, stubborn
Some of My Favorite SFW Quotes:
-Dedication: to the ones who find endless kindness for others but nothing for themselves: listen closely, the love is there
-I typically pride myself on that: being a lot. A lot of thoughts and opinions. A lot of books and projects and ideas. A lot of jokes and fun. All the better to go with the hips, ass, belly, and breasts I also have a lot of.
-I can see the cliff we’re about to drive off. But I’ve never had very good brakes.
-It’s killing me, and I can’t even care. Let it cut me. If that’s what she needs, I’ll gladly bleed out.
-Because this essence? This woman? I don’t know why—but I know they’re mine.
-“While we’re here, you can call me ‘King.’”
-Jesse locks eyes with me. Something gentle warms the green and gold. “I’m here,” he says again, staring right into me. “I’m here with you.”
-Victory swoops through me. My blood heats, and my chest lights. All because this woman agreed to let me try to convince her that I care.
-I can’t control the need to drift into her orbit. Count those freckles up close. See if she’s truly gotten sweeter, or if my mind is playing tricks on me.
-Our mouths brush and cling. And everything I was floats away. Until I’m just… hers. I’m starting to suspect that’s all I’ve ever really wanted to be.
