This true story of survival has stuck with me deeper than any other I've read. It's not often I can say a book has stayed with me over the years (decades!) but this one has. In particular I think it's the sheer level of injury and difficulty for Joe Simpson in getting himself to safety and how he describes his mental process in breaking down the impossible journey into micro steps. I have done a lot of backpacking in the wilderness in Alaska where I live - it can be an unforgiving place and sometimes the weather or minor injuries make things difficult. When my mental fortitude begins to wane, I immediately think of Joe and begin breaking down my own journey into small pieces and then there I am.
