Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto

4.0

I will always be amused by how Japanese authors always seems to make such beautiful stories out of the most mundane things in our lives and evoke our emotions in simple writings.

Kitchen, as my first Yoshimoto, slowly dragged my hand to explore grief and loss of loved ones as the story went with Mikage and Yuichi. For me, the way both Mikage and Yuichi reacted to the tragedies are very realistically written. I also love how eloquent Yoshimoto in writing down each character's feelings and actions, yet it is still accompanied with beautiful imageries. However, though the plot might seem slow-paced sometimes, Yoshimoto successfully put me in shock and emotional state in the middle of the story. WHO KNEW I WOULD CRY OVER A PINEAPPLE AND CRAVE FOR SOMEONE TO CLIMB MY ROOM AND BRING ME A WARM KATSUDON AT THE END?

Oh, and it turns out there is a second novella after, titled Moonlight Shadow. It didn't get any better. It drowned me even further into sadness.
