The Highwayman by Kerrigan Byrne
2.0

Conflicted on this one. On one hand, it’s refreshing to see a hero with trauma that is actually named trauma and has serious effects on his mental health instead of just being brushed off. And I’ll admit, the sex scene would’ve blown my fucking mind at age 15.

On the other hand, this plotting has got to be straight out of Twilight fan fiction, and Farah is such a Mary Sue that I honestly can’t care about her. It got so melodramatic that I had to skim a lot of the last third—“my soul called out to your soul!!” Sorry, but no one can actually say that in real life without bursting out laughing. And stepping back and looking at this kind of stuff as a sane adult—being the victim of abuse DOES NOT give you a blank check to abuse others. Really not down for another iteration of “let’s romanticize toxic abusive relationships by covering them in petticoats and a Heathcliff wannabe.”

Came to this book because I was told that Kerrigan Byrne was even better than Sarah MacLean and can now attest that this is certainly not the case. This is a wild and crazy ride, and if you’re in the mood for crazy sauce gothic twilight fan fiction, then this’ll hit the spot, but I don’t think I’ll be returning to this author anytime soon.
