This book is so haunting. I had read it before and I don’t know why I felt compelled to read it again but I just had to get my hands on it. It’s just as spooky and devastating the second time around as it was the first, which is impressive considering I already knew the twist. There’s so many layers to the plot and the history of the characters in this novel, especially with the perversion of widely held beliefs like a mother’s love and the idyllic setting of a small Southern town. I’ll always be thinking about this quote in particular: “a child weaned on poison considers harm a comfort”
Graphic: Medical trauma, Self harm, Murder, Body horror, Sexual content, Vomit, Blood, and Sexual violence
