challenging dark mysterious reflective tense medium-paced

Loveable characters: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

A strong concept with a bizarre execution. Very unusual use of references to Freud, particularly over-mind and under-mind theory with relation to incest. Aldiss’ approach to the genre is very original, but I was quite confused and underwhelmed with his delivery. So many questions were left unanswered by the reprieve, and the plot was cheapened overall. The plot felt like Aldiss made it up as he went along a little, but there were definitely aspects of it that I enjoyed. Wish we saw more of the political system, the conclusion and a better explanation for the crux of the novel. An interesting, unusual sci-fi classic.
