Thérèse Raquin by Émile Zola

5.0

An amazing and unforgettable novel. Although published in 1867, it's still pretty shocking. And I say that as someone who regularly reads modern hardboiled crime and is not easily shocked. The narrative is like a brutal cocktail of James M. Cain, Dostoyevsky, and Poe. It's the type of novel that makes me realize within thirty pages that it's going to become a favorite (and it has). Highly recommended for anyone who likes dark, psychological crime novels.
