The Coldest Girl in Coldtown by Holly Black

4.0

➸Trigger Warnings for: Blood and Gore, Torture, and Violence.

The Coldest Girl in Coldtown was quite an enjoyable read, from the very first chapter, I found myself intrigued, the first chapter was especially horror-like. I was turning the pages very fast, finishing this book in just a few hours. However, there was just something missing from the novel, something I couldn't put my finger on.

Through constant flashbacks, Black fleshes out Tana and Gavriel (the mysterious love interest) and gives them a lot more backstory. The world was interesting, I would have loved to learn more about the cold towns and if they differ from place to place. Though I did read Black's short story in this world which focuses on a girl called Matilda, who we see being mentioned multiple times throughout the novel. The way vampires were made etcetera was different, it definitely adds flair to prevent this from being just your average vampire story. However, I did wish for more explanation about it.

Tana was cool, I really loved her, and while some of her decisions were definitely questionable, she was unapologetic about how she lived her life and I loved that. I appreciate how the romance wasn't such a HUGE part of the story, that was like a breath of fresh air. We meet the ex-boyfriend who Tana teams up with, and he paled in comparison to Gavriel. When it came to the ex-boyfriend, I didn't really care for him, I neither liked nor disliked him. He was just there.

Overall, an exciting fast-paced novel with a great female main character. While I have mixed feelings, it was still an enjoyable read. There was just something off about it though, something missing. As of yet, I still can't think what it is.
