Exes and O's by Amy Lea

4.0

4.5 stars rounded down to 4. This book was like catnip. Once I started reading, I didn't want to stop because it left me absolutely giddy.

Tara loves love. She sees life through a romance novel lens; finding meet-cutes on the subway. Or at least it was a meet-cute before he stole her purse. When she needs a date for a Valentines Day gala, Tara thinks that maybe it's time to get one of her ex-boyfriends a second chance. After eliminating some right off the bat, she enlists the help of her roommate Trevor as a romance life-coach to help her navigate reconnecting with the rest. But when she starts developing feelings for Trevor, will she abandon her second-chance romance plans for a little 'room-mance?'

I loved Tara, right from the start. She was so relatable and funny. I enjoyed watching her work through her feelings about her last breakup: the gaslighting, the implications that she was 'crazy.' It was so well done. I really loved how Trevor and Tara connected. They didn't have a meet-cute, but they had more of a meet-heart, with their heart-to-heart through the bathroom door. And I enjoyed how Trevor slowly gave Tara pieces of himself-the things that he might have otherwise kept hidden away- until she had all of him. The tension between them built so wonderfully that I couldn't really be mad at the slow burn.

Exes and O's is rom-com perfection. I highly recommend it. The only thing that kept me from rounding up to five stars was the third act. I wish there had been more after the resolution. I like a little more meat to the end of my rom-com novels. Not a deal breaker for me as a reader, but typically the difference between 4 and 5 stars.
