The Lion & the Mouse by Jerry Pinkney

This story is told entirely though its illustrations and captures the spirit of kindness. A small mouse runs into a large lion while fleeing from an owl. Rather than eating the mouse, the lion releases it. Later on, the lion finds himself in a dangerous situation and the mouse attempts to repay him for his earlier act of kindness.
As the story opens in the savannah, the two main characters are established and their distinct differences are established. The mouse is fleeing from a predator, terrified of being eaten, while the strong lion is basking in the sun without worry. A common theme the story shares with most other works of traditional literature is that kindness is often rewarded in time. Also categorizing the story as traditional literature is the determination and rising up of an unlikely hero.
