I finally read this book.
It was first assigned to me 25 years ago. I didn't read it.
I bought the highly regarded Edith Grossman translation 20 years ago. I didn't read it. Until now!
It's hard to review Don Quixote when we (modern readers) are so familiar with the novel as genre of literature. But Don Quixote was the first of its kind, so in that context alone it's extraordinary. But being so familiar with the novel, it's really hard to appreciate what Don Quixote is and does. I kept imaging myself as a reader when it was first published--how weird and refreshing it must have been.
The characters are memorable, yes. This novel is really funny at times. But it's also extremely tedious. And that was before I got to the second book, which honestly added nothing to my experience, aside from adding several hundred pages. And in a weird but (I feel) apt comparison, this reminded me a lot of How I Met Your Mother.
I appreciate this novel for its context in literature. And I'm happy to say I finally read it.
