Patrick Ness is brilliant for interweaving various elements into his books, this book being no exception.
A coming of age story of a young teen boy struggling with balancing so many aspects of his life; his family, religion, friendships, loves, identity, and learning to appreciate the wild ride of emotions that are inflicted by such sporadic events that have the power to turn one's life entirely upside down. With all of these complex growing pains that most everyone could relate too, Patrick Ness adds a whole other dimension to his novel, mirroring the story he weaves with a paralleling story of fantasy and mythicism. This added level to the story truly brings multiple senses to the idea of release, of moving on from the hurts that occur in life. Its a story of how both the lows and highs counter one another and all you can do is accept things for what they realistically are, deal with them in the best way you know how and learn to let things go when they are out of your control.
