There There by Tommy Orange

“Maxine makes me read her Indian stuff that I don’t always get. I like it, though, because when I do get it, I get it way down in that place where it hurts but feels better because you feel it, something you couldn’t feel before reading it, that makes you feel less alone, and like it’s not gonna hurt as much anymore”⁣

There, There by Tommy Orange is one of the best books I’ve read all year. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 from me, and I’m stingy with my stars. This book is important literature. I utilized half a container of book darts marking passages or phrases pulling at my soul.⁣
This is the story of the urban Indian life. All stories converge during a community Powwow in Oakland. Each chapter is filled with solid character development focusing on one individual. As you read, the characters all connect in some way, and it’s a bit of a puzzle. The stories are heart-breaking and the writing is some of the best I’ve read. This author understands and relates suffering, trauma, and resilience in a manner so rare and precious, I just wanted to hug the book every time I picked it up. ⁣
This content will put you in your place and demand you square your shoulders with any blind spots in your privilege. This isn’t a light read, but it’s an important one and contemporary writing and character development does not get any better than this!⁣
