I read The Thing on the Doorstep to prepare to watch Suitable Flesh (2023) and I am glad that I did so I can better appreciate the modernizing (and spicy) decisions made for the movie.
Lovecraft's** work tends to be dry and leaves a lot of the horror up to the imagination of the reader. The Thing on the Doorstep however is is most horror-on-the-page book I've read and for that I loved it. It has an eldritch cult, body swapping, body horror, tense thriller aspects and more. Probably my favorite of his work when it comes to actual storytelling.

**Lovecraft was a terrible person with disgusting views on people. My discussion of his book to understand media based on it is not meant to be seen as an agreement or promotion of his views. May he roll in his grave every time a POC, queer, or woman writer creates amazing eldritch and cosmic horror media.
