Legends & Lattes
by Travis Baldree
Viv, an orc weary of battle, weary of fighting monsters, decides to hang up her sword and open up something called a café. In a gnomish city she's discovered an exotic new drink called coffee. She thinks it might become popular. All Viv needs to get her new venture going is captial, a good location (ley line proximity might help), and people to help her out. And, a maybe-magical artifact. As she builds her business, the people Viv hires---a hob carpenter, a rattkin baker, a succubus assistant, a college mage to provide a bit of security, a human bard with a thaumaturgic amp---become her friends.
During the course of Legends & Lattes, Viv enounters some potential enemies. There are some setbacks. But the main thrust of this charming and engagingly written fantasy novel is this: be bold, leave your old self behind, start a new venture, and you might meet some amazing people and be able to live a wonderful, completely unexpected, second act of your life. Author Travis Baldree presents readers with a comfortable, likeable world and a bunch of distinct and lively characters to pal around with. I had a lovely, relaxing time hanging out with this book.
