The First Lost Boy by Casey L. Bond
2.75

This book, unfortunately, fell off significantly from the first one. At the beginning, we were onto something! It was twisted and dark and intriguing, and I was ready to see where the story took me. And then it all went downhill. The plot took such a sharp turn into something else entirely, and I preferred the direction the story had set up previously. The point of views also got really weird and confusing, as we had like two from one random character, one from another, a few scattered from another, and then in our main girl's POV, it got super weird and hard to follow what was going on.

The ending also just felt very abrupt and random, like we built up this whole confrontation for two books, and then some other random person comes in and takes care of it? What?? And instead of giving us closure in the end with all of the different characters, we get a random spice scene in the last chapter.

Which, speaking of that, the romance in this duology did not land for me at all. I already had trouble believing in them in the first book, but towards the end of that one, I was starting to like what they had blossoming, but that's part of the problem: their relationship was just at its beginnings in the last book, but in this one, we don't build off of that. They barely interact in this book, so all of their relationship development stays stagnant where it was before, and then
they don't even remember each other and are going off of the memories Hudson wrote down
so I feel like by the end of the story, I'm supposed to believe in their love and connection, but I just don't.

So overall, not my favorite read, but the first book was a pretty interesting story, so I'd still recommend giving this series a try.
