As always, the books in the Sunrise Cove series are true standalones. They share a town, not characters.
This story is such a testament to how people not only see things differently, but can have a totally different experience during the same incident. It’s all in how you fit into the mix and your personality. Lexi’s relationship with her mom, Daisy, was extremely complicated. In many ways, her step-sister didn’t understand Lexi’s cool demeanor toward her mom. The mom who raised her step-daughter (Ashley) as if she were her own, while Lexi was sent across the country to live with her dad. Over and over, Daisy failed to show up for Lexi because of her gambling addiction ruling her actions. My heart broke for Lexi and how insignificant she was made to feel. When Lexi and Ashley band together to fulfill her mom’s last wishes, Lexi is confronted with how her mom showed up for others. As her walls begin to crack, Ashley is finally able to see Daisy as Lexi does and understands her more. The sisterly bond is able to be cemented once they know each other on a deeper level.
While Lexi and Ashley are figuring their sibling relationship out, Lexi is also trying not to fall in love. Her childhood rival and teenage crush is a big part of Ashley’s life, and was very close with Daisy before she died. Heath has as many scars as Lexi when it comes to parental love and romantic relationships, yet neither can deny the pull they have toward each other. Over and over, they say the wrong thing and inadvertently hurt each other. Yet they also have an ease with each other and find themselves sharing secrets they never share.
This was a lovely story about finding love and finding a way to heal childhood trauma to be able to open your heart to that love. Not that love fixes everything, but finding trust with someone is a huge first step.
