House of Furies by Madeleine Roux

This book has been sitting on my TBR shelf for a long time until one of my booksta friends’ reviews about this caught my attention. According to her, this book is somewhat like what she expected Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children to be like. Since I loved that series, I am confident that this will be great.

It has Miss Peregrine’s vibes indeed. There are old, creepy pictures, children with abilities, monsters, and a crone that resembles Miss Peregrine herself.

Sadly, it was an okay read for me. While the plot and characters were intriguing, I found the main character to be unlikable. Her stubbornness and curiosity don't bother me, but her foolishness and fickleness do.

The pace is so slow that it is unbearable, but there are still many plot holes in the end. I believe the reason for this point is that this is the first book in the series. I found the inserts that explained rare myths and legends to be a confusing add-on to the plot. There is too much information, but it is not utilized effectively in the story.

Well, I truly hope that the sequels will improve.
