All the Birds in the Sky
by Charlie Jane Anders
Magic and science, twice in a row!
A near future, black mirror Earth, assassins visions, witches and physicists. I absolutely adored the plot of this book, tracking the lives of Laurence and Patricia as they move inexorably towards the end of the world (possibly!) The characters were well written, foibles and all. I really felt for their trials during adolescence, and loved the idea of a non-serendipitous reunion in adulthood. Sometimes it take a time apart to realise what or who you need in your life and this was beautifully portrayed.
The structure of the magic in the book was nicely accomplished - sensible and not too out there. It was definitely a "wish i could do that" scenario. But the author manages to make the science sound just as interesting as the magic, and just as impressive in many ways. The ambiguity of who is in the right and wrong was well done, and the conclusion of the book was very satisfying.
Reading this for the prompt: A book by a trans or nonbinary author.
