With the Fire on High
by Elizabeth Acevedo
I have yet to see a book that talks about teen mothers in the way this book does. This book talks about it as it's something that happens and doesn't always impact the person in a negative manner and I loved that. I loved that this book had Emoni's grandmother as her guardian as she raised her daughter, went to school, and held a part-time job.
Something else that I loved was how nothing was sugar-coated and you got to see how harsh things could be for Emoni. You got to see her struggle with school and decisions she constantly was making for herself and her daughter. You got to see her thought process and how sometimes she gave up things for the sake of her grandmother and daughter. I loved how this book shows the importance of family and it shows this through food. It shows how food connects people to each other regardless of their backgrounds.
