The Little Red Crane by Cornelius Van Wright

5.0

The Little Red Crane by Cornelius Van Wright is a nicely illustrated story that is prefect for younger children who are fascinated by vehicles and heavy construction equipment. I think fans of Thomas the Tank Engine and Bob the Builder would love this story. The story centers on crane named Dex and his operator named Pete. Dex is mini crane and his design is really quite fascinating. I have personally never seen this type of crane. Dex is off to work on a very big job and has to travel through the city to get to the job site. Along the way, Dex encounters other cranes, who tell Dex about their respective jobs. When Dex reaches his destination, he helps assemble a tyrannosaurs rex as part of an exhibit. Also along the way, there are some facts thrown in, such as how a ton weighs 2,000 pounds. At the end of the book, there are pages which give some truly interesting facts about cranes.
As an elementary school teacher, I can say that students will enjoy this book at story time. I also see students wanting to look at this book on their own during free reading time. I am a special education teacher and all of my students are on the autism spectrum and LOVE vehicles. This book is a must have addition for my classroom library,
