Dragonwatch by Brandon Mull

Reread: June 2020

I'm surprised at how much of this book I'd forgotten! It was such a joy to relive this story, though it was weird to read a "Fablehaven" book and not remember every little bit of it. I can't wait to continue onto the next book in my reread.

---

This was everything I could have ever hoped for.

I have been waiting for this book for literal years. When it got pushed back from last fall to this past Tuesday, I could have cried! But it was definitely worth the wait. It was more than worth the wait.

I think the best thing about this book is that it still felt like a Fablehaven book. I mean, it's been seven years since Keys to the Demon Prison came out, and Brandon Mull has published so many books since then, but I really felt like I was coming home to my friends and family, it was like I'd never even left. The characters felt the same (though I was missing Warren a hell of a lot!) and it just felt right. I don't know how much sense that makes, but it's the best way I can describe it.

I will admit that I was worried about the story. I've avoided all synopses of this book so I could be surprised when I read it, but I was pretty worried the story wouldn't hold up. I didn't want it to be one of those sequels that you wish had never happened and you had never read. But this was great, and like I said, it felt like an authentic Fablehaven story. It feels logical that this story would follow after everything else that has happened. It works. And I could not be more relieved.

I really liked everything about this book. The use of the ogre-part as foreshadowing to the end of the novel was brilliant and left me incredibly impressed. I don't quite like Knox as a character, but you've got to admit he comes in handy. (Also, I'm pretty sure Tess is in on the secret by the end of the book, but I guess we'll have to wait to see about that). I can't wait to see where the story goes from here, and how Kendra and Seth will be involved since they're basically trapped at Wyrmroost.

But I'm gonna die, having to wait a whole nother year for the next one!
