This book was so much more than I expected it to be. First off, it was an homage to the writings of Victorian England and way more literary than I expected. Secondly, it was way more thematically complex and nuanced than I expected. The author really dove into the darker side of romance, marriage, and family in Victorian England. As for the characters, they were also complex and nuanced. Even the side characters were complicated, so much more than innocent victims. They were strong and fierce and truly awesome. Adele was amazing and I absolutely adored her. She had a darkness to her yet was still capable of so much love and loyalty. Her character development was fantastic, as she found her place in the world, her confidence, and learned to use all her abilities and knowledge. As for writing itself, it was beautiful. Adele had an amazing voice and I was immediately pulled into the story. The ending was not my favorite but it was well executed and was a logical conclusion. Overall, I was blown away by this book.
