Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption by Laura Hillenbrand
5.0
This is such a powerful and amazing story! I learned a lot about what was happening in World War II with the Japanese, and I gained a greater appreciation for the sacrifices so many of our soldiers make. We are truly in their debt! I also felt a deeper sense of patriotism and gratitude to be an American. As I read of the imprisoned POW's looking up into the sky and seeing American planes flying overhead the tears just flowed. What they went through and survived in those camps was heartbreaking. Reading this book gave me a greater sense of understanding and compassion for an uncle who was in the Marine's and had been captured, and was tortured in one of these Japanese camps. His life was never the same again. He could never get over it and turned to alcohol to cope with what he had lived through. I now have a better understanding of why.
Louis Zamperini's resilience was incredible. (Holding the beam above his head..."He cannot break me!"...another scene in the book where tears flowed!) His resilience and his redemption were amazing and truly inspiring! This is a story that will stay with me for a long time.
