I'm glad this wasn't my introduction to T. Kingfisher and her world of the White Rat. It's decidedly darker and more horror-filled than the cozy fantasy-romance arcs I was introduced to first in Saint of Steel and Swordheart.
As someone who doesn't typically read modern horror, but loves a good romp through historic Gothic literature, this one was right at my limit for the macabre I can tolerate. I also struggled to engage with the romance, which registered much more as a subplot here that was overshadowed by the darker tone and setting of the story. A great Halloween read for lovers of Saint of Steel, especially Paladin's Hope.
