Salvage the Bones
by Jesmyn Ward
After I read Jesmyn Wards memoir, Men We Reaped, I was determined to read every book she has ever written because her memoir has become one of my all time favorites.
Salvage The Bones is a work of fiction that takes place in the days leading up to Hurricane Katrina. The story focuses on Esch, a 14 year old girl, living with her 3 brothers and father in the fictional, coastal town of Bois Sauvage, Mississippi.
Ms. Ward is an absolutely phenomenal and talented writer. After reading her memoir, I can’t help but think parts of this story are autobiographical, specifically the dog fighting aspect. I was surprised that the actual event of Katrina didn’t happen until the last 3rd of the book.
What we are given is the story of Esch and her family trying to survive and find love and meaning in their everyday life. By the time the hurricane hits, I was so invested in the characters and their lives that my heart broke for all they lost but I was hopeful for their future.
