Cop Town
by Karin Slaughter
“It’s very important for your life to have meaning. Even on the days it makes you unhappy, you still need a purpose.”
― Karin Slaughter, Cop Town
Cop Town by Karin Slaughter is crime novel, centered around the Atlanta Police Department in the 1970's. The Atlanta Police department is going through some changes, and many of the older white men in the department are very resistant. They are for the first time getting officers from other races and genders. There are even female police officers that are also African American! Maggie and Kate are both female officers that are just trying to do their job without problems. When a cop killer known as "the shooter" starts killing people in Atlanta, all of the officers have to work together to catch the killer.
Cop Town was Karin Slaughter's first stand alone novel. I thought it was just okay, I wasn't really interested in the story line for most of the book. I was constantly reminding myself of the time frame that this took place, there is so much racisim and sexism in this book. I almost bailed at the beginning because of the racial slurs and the way they treated the women in this book. I had to work to remember that it was the 1970's and the world was a little different. Overall I gave this book 3 stars. I wasn't really impressed with the twist at the end and I think the ending was rushed. There were many questions left unanswered. This one was not Slaughter's best, but she does create excellent work. I am hoping my next by her will be the first in the Will Trent series!
