There are very few books that make me feel as seen as this book did. Faridah Abike-Iyimide portrays the feeling of Otherness in such a truthful and complete way that breaks my heart. Whether it’s the subtlety of micro aggressions or the violence of more blatant forms racism, Faridah gives the feelings that Devon and Chiamaka have the weight they deserve.

As triggering as this book was for me (and I really want to warn any future Black people who read it), it was beautiful to see what I had felt so many times in my life, be put down on paper.

Faridah is a fantastic writer who manages to delve deep into the two main characters, as well as multiple serious topics, while wielding the tension and intrigue of the novel’s mystery with expert precision. I deeply enjoyed this book and can’t wait to see what else she writes.
