The Island of Sea Women by Lisa See

5.0

The Island of Sea Women is a great work of Historical Fiction by Lisa See. It’s a really heart-rending story; I loved learning about the strong Haenyeo women of Jeju (an island in South Korea) and the struggles they went through to provide for their families.

Our main characters, Mi-Ja and Young-Sook, lived thru the tragic 4.3 incident on Jeju where thousands of Korean citizens lost their lives. This book, told through Young-Sooks perspective, follows her life and friendship with Mi-Ja over the span of decades.

It’s such a great story! Definitely full of grief, but left me with a very hopeful feeling. I listened to the audiobook and Jennifer Lim was a fantastic narrator! I feel so grateful to have read this book and learn about these women and what they must’ve gone through during such a tragic time.
