The Dark Side: The Inside Story of How the War on Terror Turned Into a War on American Ideals by Jane Mayer

4.0

Even though we lived through the Bush presidency (survived it, perhaps), this reminder of the grevious breaches of American law, international law, the Constitution, the Geneva Conventions, morality and ethics was a harsh reminder of how horrible it all was. The role played by the lawyers (Yu and Addington and many others) is particularly troubling for me to revisit. And I remain extremely frustrated that, despite Obama's very explicit promises and the several judicial opinions, Guantanamo remains open today (as of February 2012, 171 detainees remain at Guantanamo). Teaching my 8th Graders about the Constitution, I remind them that we set these aspirational standards because we want to be a better people, but our actions here speak louder than our words.
